This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill swimming hole. It’s a massive freshwater spring that opens up right into the sea. The result? A mind-boggling mix of fresh and saltwater that creates a unique, bustling biodiversity hotspot.
Pack your cameras, leave your stress behind, and let’s dive into everything you need to know about this magical paradise!
🏃♂️ The Warm-Up: The Canopy Walk
Once you hit the tourist-holding area, you have a choice. You could hop on the swift shuttle bus, or, if you’re able-bodied and skipped cardio this week, you can take a glorious 5-minute stroll called the Canopy Walk.
The Vibe
Shaded, peaceful, and entirely surrounded by nature.
The Flora
Keep your eyes peeled for the Pagi-Pagi tree, a resilient local celebrity that thrives on limestone right by the water. You’ll also spot wild orchids clinging to tree trunks like floral hitchhikers and lush ferns creating the ultimate tropical mood lighting.
Whether you ride in style or walk the walk, the journey is half the magic.
🚫 The Blue Lagoon: Look, Don’t Touch!
Eventually you will arrive at the Blue Lagoon, the absolute heart of the Enchanted River. It is the inspiration behind the official conservation tagline: “Bluer Than Blue.”

NO SWIMMING IN THE BLUE LAGOON!
We mean it. Keep those toes out of the water.
Why the strict rule? Because of its delicate ecosystem and walls prone to erosion, swimming is strictly banned in the main lagoon. This keeps the water crystal clear and preserves the environment for future generations.
The Good News? Your Instagram game is about to peak. This area is the ultimate backdrop for selfies. Strike a pose, look majestic, and save the actual swimming for the designated zones downstream!
Science vs. Magic: Why is it Like That?
The Enchanted River is a bit of a shapeshifter. Depending on when you show up, you might see two entirely different worlds:
Bluer than a Swimming Pool
During low tide, the spring flushes out water so ridiculously pure and incredibly deep that it turns a mesmerizing blue.
Emerald Green
At high tide, seawater rushes in, kissing the limestone walls. The limestone “bleeds” into the water, changing the clarity to a gorgeous green.
The Mayor’s Chamber 🕳️
Underneath this magical water lies a massive underwater cavern called the Mayor’s Chamber. How big is it? You could comfortably park three full-sized basketball courts inside it. To this day, scuba divers still haven’t found the absolute bottom. It’s a literal abyss of beauty.
🐟 The VIP Guest List: Who’s Who Underwater
It makes absolutely no scientific sense for saltwater fish to live happily in a freshwater spring, but during high tide, the ocean acts as a delivery service, bringing in seawater, plankton and a star-studded cast of many fish species. Conspicuous among them is the bignose unicornfish—yes, a fish with a horn, as shown in the photo below.

🎶 The Main Event: Fish Feeding & Cultural Show
You haven’t truly experienced the Enchanted River until you witness the Fish Feeding and Cultural Show, happening daily at 12:00 NN and 3:00 PM.
When the music starts playing, a massive school of fish appears and literally “dances” in the water for their lunch. While they put on a swimming performance, a narrated story plays to give you the deep historical and cultural background of why this river is treated with absolute reverence.

The Origin Story: Rio Encantado
Where did the name come from? Many years ago, a man named Modesto Farolan fell head over heels in love with a local maiden. He wrote a poem called Rio Encantado, “The Enchanted River,” to capture her beauty, which later translated into the mystical vibe of Enchanted River itself. Later, Francisco Rio set the poem to music, turning it into the legendary song you hear during the show.
🧚♂️ Fairies and Public Policy
If romance isn’t your thing, the locals have another explanation for the name: Literal magic.
Local stories, including those from locals like Fe De Jesus (who used to do laundry here before the tourists invaded), speak of a resident fairy or engkanto.
The Story of the Tree Net
One day, a fisherman named Sebio (Eusebio Ornaza in full) set his nets in the lagoon. The next morning, he returned to find his fishing nets tangled high up in the canopy of the trees. The fairy enchantress had brought them up there to protect her beloved fish. Message received!

The Modern Guardians
Today, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur acts as the modern-day fairy. The river is a strictly monitored protected area.
When developers tried to pave a concrete road right up to the water, cave divers discovered that the Hinatuan Enchanted River Underground Cave System (HERUCS) was sitting directly underneath like a hollow glass ceiling! Construction was immediately halted, private cars were banned, and the parking lot was moved far away to prevent a catastrophic collapse. Good looking out, LGU!
🏊♂️ Time to Swim, Eat and Explore!
The Fountain of Youth? Head downstream to the designated swimming area, and you’ll find water so pure and refreshing people who swim in it come out looking fair, radiant and practically glowing. It’s cheaper than a skincare routine!

Island Hopping ⛵
Ready for more? Head to the nearby boating station. You can hire local boat operators from the neighboring barangays of Cambatong and Talisay (yay for community-based tourism!) to take you to:
1. Sibadan Fish Cage
2. Lodestone Shores Resort
3. Rock Island Resort
Seafood & Souvenirs 🦀
When your stomach starts growling, head back up to the elevated Dining Area near the tourist holding facility. It is absolutely loaded with fresh seafood and refreshing fruit shakes.

Don’t forget to stop by the souvenir shops to grab a keepsake to prove you survived the fairy’s domain.
Planning to come to the Enchanted River? Get ready for an unforgettable, mystical, and downright gorgeous adventure. May the enchantment be with you!
